The Philippines On The Rise

MANILA, Philippines — When I drive out in the old Fort Bonifacio area, and see all those high rises being constructed, it looks like a brand-new city, rising all at once, rather than an extension of Manila. And appropriately it has been named Bonifacio Global City.

When President Aquino made his annual State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA) which was a bit long at an hour and a half, but brimming with optimism, it correctly set the tone for what is happening today.

The Philippines was mercifully spared the fallout from the financial crisis that has hit the United States and Europe over the past three years. “Once known as Asia’s sick man,” according to a Reuters report, “The Philippines is now one of the region’s fastest growing economies, with strong finance and soaring markets.” President Aquino, the report goes on, “is taking advantage of his country’s strength to increase infrastructure spending and offset slowing global growth.”
